Why did Adam Lambert, who was favored for the win, lose American Idol to Kris Allen? Rolling Stone's Rock & Roll Daily suggests five reasons, including the fact that the show skews conservative: "Idol isn't afraid to embrace an innovator like Cook, but the show overall tends to reflect the tastes of a majority of its audience--past winners Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard et al. were all understated in appearance and performance. Lambert, however, had an extreme stage persona and a wilder taste for rock & roll fashion." Plus, "Being the judges' pet doesn't always pay off." But over at HuffPo, Jim David thinks it's more than that: "Yes, homophobia is alive and well, which is why Lambert lost the ultimate title. Go ahead--give me another reason." Pop Vox has seven, including that "Idol has always favored syrupy balladeers or pop singers," "the Christian factor," and "the gay factor."
On the other hand, says reality blurred, "As surprised as I was, upon second thought, Adam's loss and Kris' victory is not all that surprising. Besides the failure of conspiracy theories and the general unpredictability of viewer voting habits, Adam and Kris have been basically tied: three weeks ago they were in the bottom three together, and last week just one million votes separated them."
